Turning Contradictions into Opportunities: Systematic Innovation for Sustainable Water Systems

This paper proposes a structured methodological framework for systematic innovation in water systems, addressing the challenges posed by resource scarcity, climate change and aging infrastructure.

The author integrates the TRIZ methodology with innovation management processes to overcome traditional technical compromises, transforming contradictions into design opportunities. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of the digital twin, understood as an active laboratory for innovation and solution validation.

Through two case studies—hybrid desalination and reuse of treated wastewater—the study demonstrates the approach's effectiveness in terms of sustainability, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. The model, while focused on the water sector and the MENA context, is clearly transferable to other complex infrastructure areas.
